About Us

Lesson Information

We offer individual 1:1 lessons.

We are currently operating from Sherriff’s Road Swimming Centre in Reynella, south of Adelaide.

No entry fee applies but casual swimming is not permitted.

Lessons run for half an hour once a week. Please note that fortnightly lessons cannot be accommodated.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or carer.

The child is the carer’s responsibility whenever they are not in the water with us. This includes the surrounds of the pool and any toileting supervision.

Our Approach

Lessons have a different focus to typical learn to swim lessons. The learning and skill acquisition is very much person focused. We build upon the strengths that your child already has, working towards achieving goals. We like swimmers to feel comfortable around the water, while incorporating water safety and learning strokes.

Invoicing and Payment

  • HALF HOUR PRIVATE LESSONS:

Normal rate: Lucy $65, Keaton $55.

    Special sibling rate: Keaton $45.

Special introductory offer: Five lessons, Keaton $200 in total (SA Government-issued Sports Vouchers may be used).

  • Invoices are split into two termly payments, one at the start of the term, and one halfway through. These need to be paid in full by the due date on the invoice. Payment is via bank transfer, and the invoice can be used to claim from NDIS (if applicable).

  • Plan-managed participants are invoiced from Core Supports or Capacity Building, Innovative Community Participation unless otherwise requested.

  • Weekly claim to your NDIS plan: This incurs a $5 weekly admin fee. Please make sure that funds are allocated for this activity and provide us with the correct NDIS code for funding for your child.

Cancellation Policy

  • Payment needs to be made whether or not lessons are attended. In extenuating circumstances, we may not charge for a specific week or may issue a credit if already paid.

  • The pool area is hired weekly with specific times reserved which cannot be cancelled. However, if you are not going to attend a lesson, we do ask you to notify us before time if possible.

Child Protection Policy and Safety

The wellbeing and safety of any person we are supporting is of utmost importance to us. We are committed to the protection of children and people with a disability. Any information provided to us is private. It is mandatory for us to report any abuse or neglect that we become aware of. We have undergone relevant training and checks:

Benefits of Lessons

This aquatic program targets three areas, with many benefits.

1. Water therapy

Ensuring swimmers are comfortable and happy to be in and around the water, in order to set them up with the best chance of learning. Water based exercise reduces stress on the body and can have many therapeutic benefits:

  • reduced musculoskeletal pain and stiffness

  • improved ability to attain motor skills and coordination

  • increased muscle strength and endurance

  • improved self-regulation, attentiveness and concentration

  • opportunities to meet individual sensory needs.

2. Water safety

Teaching water safety helps in drowning prevention. The aim is to teach skills that can be generalised to other aquatic settings, such as safety at the beach. Water safety is imperative, especially for swimmers who may have a decreased ability to perceive risk and danger.

3. Skill development

Adapting and modifying teaching techniques for all abilities, we work toward individual goals.

This program provides opportunities for:

  • developing social skills and communication

  • developing swimming skills

  • learning to swim strokes

  • decreasing water related anxiety.

Other Considerations

Sensory needs

Sights, sounds and smells (such as chlorine) may be overwhelming in a swimming environment. Dark goggles could help with light sensitivity, while others may not tolerate goggles. Ear wraps and swimming caps may help sound sensitivity or the uncomfortable feeling of water in the ears. Please wear either a full bather or rashie (helpful with the cold in winter).

Physical contact

The nature of this work involves physical contact in the pool. If, at any point, you are uncomfortable with this, or if your child prefers not to be touched, please let us know.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lessons are on Thursday afternoons 4.30pm to 6.00pm and Saturdays 11.00am to 2.30pm. Our availability varies. Current availabilities are 4.30pm on a Thursday with Lucy and from 12.45pm on a Saturday with Keaton. Please email with a specific time request and we will let you know if it is available.

The pool is generally kept at 32 degrees Celsius, which is a very comfortable temperature. In summer on a hot day the water may be cooler. In winter we do recommend a long sleeve rash vest. We find the Sharkskin rashies (online) to be very comfortable, non-perishable material. During our time slot on a Saturday the pool is considerably quiet, which is great for children with sensory issues. On a Thursday there are other lessons running at the same time and the pool is busier.

There is ongoing consultation between Autism Swim and the NDIS over this matter, since the NDIS considers swimming lessons to be an everyday parental responsibility. However, depending on funding allocations, it may be possible to claim from your NDIS fund using our invoice. We find that the greatest chance of funding is using the Capacity Building (Innovative or Community Participation) or Core Support code, but we can invoice with any code to meet your individual needs. It is best to check this with your plan manager.

Try to source some stories about swimming and water safety to read to your child. There are some Peppa Pig ones, and one from Amazon called ‘Let’s be water smart’ by Christi Brown, who lost her toddler to drowning. Practising skills at home in the bath, such as blowing bubbles and wearing goggles, can contribute to positive outcomes in lessons.

Every child is unique, and there may be a day when they are anxious, distressed, or not in the right frame of mind for their lesson. We find that the water is therapeutic and often helps with stressful feelings, so encouraging your child to get in and have a go is worth it. Small wins and progressions are still to be celebrated! We work with how the child is feeling on the day and will not use force if the child is battling to regulate their emotions. We believe it is imperative not to cause trauma around water, but rather to create a positive experience for the child. Parents need to be patient and trust the process – progress may be slow, or occur in spurts and then plateau, which is perfectly okay.
